How to get excused from jury duty in Suffolk County, New York
The excusal routes Suffolk County, New York actually recognizes — what each one needs, who decides, and where it goes.
Suffolk has two routes and the second is the one most people can actually use. On paper, the county decides financial hardship from documents — current tax forms, proof of your present employment, evidence you could not support yourself or your family — and it is blunt about the odds: excuses are rarely granted, proof is necessary, there are no excusals solely for loss of income, and any excuse granted may not exceed 24 months. In person, you report on your date and raise the hardship with the judge if you are called into a jury room. Reporting is itself service: the Unified Court System states that a person who serves — including by reporting in person — is normally not eligible to serve again in the New York State courts for at least six years (NY Judiciary Law § 524). If a later date would solve it, postponement is far easier: nyjuror.gov, or 1-800-449-2819 for a date two to six months out, or return Part A by mail. You are told only if a written request is refused.

Suffolk grants written financial excusals rarely and never for loss of income alone. In practice the hardship is raised with the judge on your service date.
NY Judiciary Law § 517 and § 524 / 22 NYCRR 128.6-a. Suffolk names what a written request must carry: current tax forms showing your financial status, documentation of your present employment (wages, hours), and any document showing your inability to provide support for yourself or your family as a result of jury service. In the same breath it says excuses are rarely granted and that there are no excusals solely for loss of income. Separately, NY Judiciary Law § 524 makes a person who has served not competent to serve again for six years, and the Unified Court System counts reporting in person as serving — so appearing on your date has a value of its own whatever happens with this trial.
