How to get excused from jury duty in Bronx County, New York

The excusal routes Bronx County, New York actually recognizes — what each one needs, who decides, and where it goes.

The Bronx will not decide financial hardship in advance. The County Clerk’s Jury Division put it in writing on 28 August 2026: “Financial hardship cannot be evaluated at this stage and would need to be addressed directly with the judge on your scheduled date.” What they offer instead is a first postponement of up to six months, no questions asked. Be clear what appearing costs: the Supervisor of Jury Operations put it at “the selection process, which typically only lasts 2-3 days”, and hardship is raised “if you are sent up on a case.” But finishing it ends the obligation — “if you are not selected in that timeframe, your service will be complete and we will not call you back to serve for 6 years.” And it is not a wasted day: the Unified Court System states that a person who serves — including by reporting in person — is normally not eligible to serve again in the New York State courts for at least six years (NY Judiciary Law § 524). Financial hardshipDecided by the judge, not in advance

The Bronx Jury Division states in writing that financial hardship cannot be evaluated before your date and must be raised with the judge.

NY Judiciary Law § 517 and § 524 / 22 NYCRR 128.6-a. New York Judiciary Law § 517 lets a court excuse a juror for undue hardship, but the Bronx does not apply it on paper. The County Clerk’s Jury Division wrote on 28 August 2026: “Financial hardship cannot be evaluated at this stage and would need to be addressed directly with the judge on your scheduled date. If you need an excusal now, you may request a first-time postponement for up to six months, no questions asked.” The Supervisor of Jury Operations added the part that matters most: “this is an issue you would bring to the judge once the selection process begins… If you are not selected in that timeframe, your service will be complete and we will not call you back to serve for 6 years.” That is § 524 in the county’s own words — completing selection discharges you for six years whether or not anyone excuses you.
