How to get excused from jury duty in Onondaga County, New York
The excusal routes Onondaga County, New York actually recognizes — what each one needs, who decides, and where it goes.
Onondaga publishes an automatic first postponement of 2 to 6 months, and decides everything else at the Commissioner’s discretion. The county’s own page states that the postponement is taken by calling (800) 449-2819, through the state juror portal, or through the Jury Office, and that “excusals are granted at the discretion of the Commissioner of Jurors.” The jury office added by phone on 9 September 2026 that a hardship request goes in with documentation, by mail, email or portal — but would not say what documentation, so ask in the request itself. Worth knowing before you count the cost: the court does not pay transportation, parking fees or parking violations, and juror parking runs $4 a day at the On-Center garage, card only.

First postponementFree — automatic, first time only
Automatic, 2 to 6 months, taken by phone or through the state juror portal. First one only. If a later date is all you need, this is the whole answer and it costs nothing.
Onondaga County jury page — read directly, 9 September 2026.“You may apply for an automatic first postponement of 2 to 6 months.” Automatic, and nobody asks why. But it is the first one only, and there is a floor as well as a ceiling: a date three weeks out is not on offer. If a different date genuinely solves your problem, take it. If it does not, keep it — what remains is a written request decided at the Commissioner’s discretion.
A written request with documentation, by mail, email or portal. The county states excusals are granted at the discretion of the Commissioner of Jurors.
NY Judiciary Law § 517(c) / 22 NYCRR § 128.6-a. The Commissioner must consider whether attendance “would cause undue hardship or extreme inconvenience to the applicant, a person under his or her care or supervision, or the public.” The regulation adds a second limb people miss: the application must also show you could not serve on a date certain within the postponement window — which is why an excusal request that reads like a postponement request gets treated as one. Onondaga publishes nothing beyond that the Commissioner decides at her discretion.

Medical conditionNo separate route — same discretionary excusal
Onondaga publishes no separate medical route. A medical excusal goes to the Commissioner like any other, at her discretion.
Onondaga County jury page, read directly — with NY Judiciary Law § 517(c). The county’s entire published statement on excusals is that they “are granted at the discretion of the Commissioner of Jurors.” There is no separate medical route, no criteria and no form. The ground itself is statutory rather than local: § 517(c) requires the Commissioner to consider a “mental or physical condition that causes him or her to be incapable of performing jury service.”
