How to get excused from jury duty in Nassau County, New York
The excusal routes Nassau County, New York actually recognizes — what each one needs, who decides, and where it goes.
Nassau is the New York county that does decide this on paper — and it decides generously. The Office of the Commissioner of Jurors told this project by email on 28 August 2026: “You can explain your situation to me and I will let you know if you qualify for a financial hardship excusal. If you do, I would be able to issue you a two-year excusal.” Asked a week later whether a juror could post a request instead, the same office answered only “you can request this way via email” — so email is confirmed and post is simply unanswered. That is the jury office assessing the request itself, before your date, with a two-year excusal if it is granted — not a postponement, and not a conversation with a judge on the day. Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx all refuse to decide financial hardship in advance; Nassau does the opposite. Send it before the registration deadline on your summons.

The Commissioner of Jurors’ office assesses your explanation itself and, if it qualifies, can issue a two-year excusal. Unusual in New York, and worth doing properly.
NY Judiciary Law § 517 / 22 NYCRR 128.6-a. The statutory test is whether jury service would significantly compromise your ability to support yourself or your dependents — not simply that you would lose pay. In Nassau the Commissioner’s office applies that test to your own account of the situation, in advance. Its reply to this project: “You can explain your situation to me and I will let you know if you qualify… If you do, I would be able to issue you a two-year excusal.” Worth knowing what New York does and does not require of employers: under § 519 an employer with more than ten employees must pay the first $72 of your daily wages for the first three days. Beyond three days, above $72 a day, or with ten or fewer employees, nothing is owed — which is usually where the real gap starts.
