How to get excused from jury duty in Alameda County, California
The excusal routes Alameda County, California actually recognizes — what each one needs, who decides, and where it goes.
Alameda does not decide financial hardship in advance — the judge does, on your first day. Jury Services put it plainly by email on 28 August 2026: “all request for excusal because of an extreme financial hardship will need to be granted by the Judge on their first day of service.” Two things follow. You may never have to go at all — the office says this only arises “if their group is requested to appear”, and groups are not always called. And documentation is welcome but not required: bring proof you will not be paid if you have it, and “if they do not have any documentation, they just need to complete the hardship request.” Separately, a postponement is available once, to a different week three to six months out — they may ask why, and you may decline to say.

Alameda’s jury office states that an extreme financial hardship excusal is granted by the judge on your first day of service — not from anything sent in beforehand.
California Rule of Court 2.1008 — as Alameda applies it. Alameda’s Jury Services Division states the process in its own words: “all request for excusal because of an extreme financial hardship will need to be granted by the Judge on their first day of service. If their group is requested to appear, they may bring a copy of their supporting documentation that establishes they will not be paid during the time of their service and when they have the opportunity to submit a hardship request with the judge, they may include that with their submission at that time. If they do not have any documentation, they just need to complete the hardship request.” The county’s public page says the same thing more quietly — “most requests may not be granted until the day of your jury service by a judge.”
