How to get excused from jury duty in Knox County, Tennessee
The excusal routes Knox County, Tennessee actually recognizes — what each one needs, who decides, and where it goes.
Knox County gives you two routes: submit documentation to the Jury Coordinator in advance, or raise it with the trial judge in person at orientation on your first day. The advance written path is the one worth using — it can resolve the matter before you ever have to appear. Active jury-duty phone scam warning posted.
Your routes in Knox County, Tennessee
Age 75 or older, with a conditionIncluded — over 75, and it is not age alone
The county has its own Age & Limitation Excusal Form. It is not age by itself — you swear that you are over 75 and that a physical or mental condition prevents you serving. Both halves have to be true.
Circuit Court for the State of Tennessee, Knox County — Age & Limitation Excusal Form, citing T.C.A. § 22-1-103. “According to Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 22-1-103, a summoned juror over the age of 75 and that is incapable of performing jury service due to a mental or physical condition is eligible to opt-out of jury service.”
Read the conjunction. Over 75 and incapable. Tennessee does not excuse on age alone, and the form is a single statement covering both facts rather than two boxes you might tick one of.
The form also says something few counties bother to: “you are welcome and encouraged to serve as a juror regardless of your age, and your service is greatly appreciated.” That is not a requirement and it changes nothing about your rights — it is simply the court being decent about it.
There is nothing here for us to sell you. The county’s own form is the mechanism, it asks for no document from anybody else, and the only thing you write is an optional comment.
One thing worth a phone call, though. Another Tennessee county using this same statute and a near-identical form requires a doctor’s note in addition — confirmed twice with that office — and its form says nothing about it either. We do not know whether Knox does the same, and we are not going to guess from the fact that the paper is silent, because next door the paper is silent too and the answer is still yes.
