How to get excused from jury duty in Hamblen County, Tennessee

The excusal routes Hamblen County, Tennessee actually recognizes — what each one needs, who decides, and where it goes.

Hamblen is the one county in this project that asks you to write your own account — and to swear it. The Clerk sent the county’s Hardship Affidavit on 10 September 2026: it gives you four blank lines after the words “My hardship is”, and you sign it as affiant — the form’s word for the person swearing to it, which is you — and have it sworn to and subscribed before the Clerk, meaning you sign it in front of them and swear out loud that it is true. The form also prints the sentence most people get wrong: “an undue or extreme physical or financial hardship does not exist solely based on the fact that a juror will be required to be absent from the juror’s place of employment.” Saying only that you will miss work is the one answer the form rules out in advance. And documentation is not optional in practice — “failure to provide satisfactory documentation may result in the denial of your request.”

Financial hardshipYour own words, sworn before the Clerk

Hamblen’s own Hardship Affidavit gives you four lines to state your hardship in your own words, sworn before the Clerk, with documentation enclosed.

Hamblen County Hardship Affidavit, with Tenn. Code Ann. § 22-4-106. The fourth limb is the one worth reading twice. A juror may be excused where they would “be deprived of compensation… [because] the prospective juror is employed by an employer who is not required to compensate jurors and declines to do so voluntarily.” Tennessee then defines exactly who that is, in a different statute: under § 22-4-106(b) an employer is not required to pay where it employs fewer than five people on a regular basis, or where the juror has been employed on a temporary basis for less than six months. Everyone else is entitled to their usual compensation, less the juror fee the employer may deduct.

Two more things from the statute the Clerk sent. Your employer must excuse you for each day your service exceeds three hours, and night-shift workers are excused from the shift immediately before, and from the next work period within 24 hours. And whoever pays your juror fee must issue you a statement of the fees — and of the hours you served each day, if you ask before the service. That statement is evidence, and it is the kind you can only get by asking in advance.

Medical conditionNot a separate route — the same affidavit

Hamblen has no separate medical path. A mental or physical condition is one of the ways the hardship standard is met, evidenced by a physician’s statement enclosed with the same affidavit.

Hamblen County Hardship Affidavit — read directly, 10 September 2026. The affidavit treats medical as part of the hardship standard, not beside it: hardship “may be present if the juror has a mental or physical condition which causes the juror to be incapable of performing jury service”, and separately where the juror would “suffer physical hardship that would result in illness or disease.” Among the documents the form invites you to enclose is “medical statement from a licensed physician.” There is no separate medical form and no published specification for what the statement must contain — which is why what it says matters more here than in counties that print the questions.
