How to get excused from jury duty in Ashtabula County, Ohio

The excusal routes Ashtabula County, Ohio actually recognizes — what each one needs, who decides, and where it goes.

The court has told us who decides, and it is not the office. The Jury Commission answered by email on 14 September 2026: excusals are based on Ohio Revised Code § 2313.14, and “ultimately, the Judge will determine any documentation that may be needed, or the process for properly excusing a juror prior their service date” — adding that “each court can be different in their determinations.” So there is no published documentation list here, and anyone who hands you one is guessing.

What the statute does settle is worth more than a list. Ohio law says in terms that hardship “does not exist solely based on the fact that a prospective juror will be required to be absent from the prospective juror’s place of employment.” “I would miss work” is not, by itself, enough in this state. Write about what the absence costs, not the absence.

Ashtabula's court is also emphatic that 'No excusals will be granted over the phone.' Everything goes in writing through the online portal, email, or text — the third Ohio county in this project on the 'ezJustice' vendor, alongside Lake and Warren.

Age 75 or olderIncluded — but it is 75, and you have to ask

Ohio’s statute excuses a juror who is over seventy-five and requests to be excused. Two things people get wrong: the age is 75, not 70, and it does not happen by itself — you have to make the request.

Ohio R.C. § 2313.14(A). The ground reads: “The juror is over seventy-five years of age, and the juror requests to be excused.”

This page previously told you Ohio had an age exemption that needed no letter. That was wrong twice over — it understated the age and it described the request away. Put it in writing like everything else here: this court grants nothing by telephone.

Financial hardshipModerate — written only, not by phone

A written request to the Judge under Ohio R.C. § 2313.14 — through the ezJustice portal, by email or by text. Never by phone. The statute says missing work alone is not hardship, so what you write has to go further than that.

Ohio R.C. § 2313.14(A) and (C)(1). The ground is “undue or extreme physical or financial hardship to the prospective juror or a person under the care or supervision of the prospective juror.” The statute then narrows it, and the narrowing is the part to read twice:

“undue or extreme physical or financial hardship does not exist solely based on the fact that a prospective juror will be required to be absent from the prospective juror’s place of employment.”

Missing work is the starting point, not the argument. What the statute does recognize is having to abandon someone in your care, costs that substantially affect necessary living expenses, physical illness, and nursing a child under one year old. Write about the consequence, with figures if you have them.

And on who decides: the Jury Commission told this project on 14 September 2026 that the Judge determines any documentation that may be needed, and that courts differ. There is no list to satisfy in advance — which is a reason to make the written account itself as clear as you can.

Caregiver or medical conditionFree — ask the court first, and here is why

The statute recognizes a mental or physical condition that makes jury service impossible, and allows the court to ask for a physician’s certificate. What this court wants that certificate to say is not published, and the office told us the Judge decides it case by case. So there is nothing here for us to sell you — ask them, then write it.

Ohio R.C. § 2313.14. Recognizes medical conditions and caregiver obligations, with documentation, submitted through the same written-only process.
